I've tried suspending them in water with toothpicks many times, but this has not worked. Does anybody have any tips or tricks beyond that?

If you are looking to watch the pit, here is an alternative you can do inside your home.

You can poke three toothpicks equally around the thickest part of the pit. Do this after you have washed the pit under clean water.

Place the pit, biggest side down, into a glass of water. The toothpicks will hold the pit in position at the rim of the glass. Maintain about an inch of water covering the base of the pit. In about 6 weeks, the pit will sprout.

If you want more information, see this instructional link. This is a fun project for kids.

I did this with an avocado pit a few years ago, didn't know if it would work or not.
At first, nothing happened. For a long while, nothing.
But after about 6 months or so a nice plant started to grow.
Give it some time. Nurture it. It'll happen.

That's how I have done it. Make sure you have it root down. Keep it wet but only about half way. I kept mine in minimal light until the roots get a good start. Then move it to a sunnier area.

Good Luck

I planted one in the summer time a few years back. I just put it in a pot that actually had an orange tree in it, and watered it. I also gave it plant food every week. I think they like sun, so put it somewhere that gets lots.
