His Kryptonian mother’s name was Lara. Her maiden name was Lara Lor-Van (Kryptonian women took their father’s full name as a surname.) She was an astronaut candidate in Krypton’s budding apace program, which Jor El was heavily involved with, and they fell in love.

After the DC reboot on the 80’s, they revamped the origin so that Jor El loved Lara but she didn’t know because they had a society which had given up on sex and little Kal El was conceived in a test tube.

Until recently, that story stood. Then they changed it back again, so that their romance was restored. (Jor El and Lara had one of the great romances in DC comics.)

His adoptive mother on Earth was Martha Clark, who married Jonathan Kent. The Kents went through even more changes than Jor El and Lara did. They aged, were made younger, they were originally shown as elderly when Superman was Superboy, then there was no more Superboy, they died before he became Superman and now in the most recent incarnation, they are elderly but still alive while Superman is having his adult career and is married to Lois.

But Jonathan and Martha also had one of the great romances in comics. After the DC reboot in the 80’s, they tweaked the Kents just a bit. Now, martha had been previously married, and her husband was dying slowly of some rare disease, and he asked Jonathan to promise him something. After Jonathan had promised, his friend asked him to romance Martha so that she would not miss him, her husband, when he died! It seems like a roundabout way of doing things, and I think I missed a couple issues there so I do not knw ho that was resolved.

But the fact is that Clark got his early training in what male-female relationships were supposed to be like from the Kents. It is safe to say that if Jonathan and Martha had not had such a great romance, then Clark and Lois would not have had the great romance they share today.
