Red fern movie questions?

i have seen both movies and i know that in one of the movies the devil cat(mountain lion at the end) gets away. Which one is it the original or the newer disney version?

In the version I know of, the cat didn't get away and I think it was from the 70s. The boy killed it with his ax. I don't think it was Disney.

in the newer one the cat gets away

All I remember is in the end,they dogs die....
