It is quite possibly due to a leak. I had a leak one winter where the guy working on my air conditioner had nicked a line. You should be able to smell the gas if it is bad at all.

Call the gas company asap to check it out. A leak is dangerous because it can cause a fire or explosion.

More than likely the current or previous bill was estimated, and not a direct reading. Or the meter was not read or the number not punched in correctly. You'd smell a leak if it was big enough to show up on the meter!

Don't fool with it, just call the gas company and report that you suspect something wrong. You need to call them because gas can be very dangerous if mis-handled by an untrained person.
