Intelligent question?

Okay
I have pondered this question below in my head for some time now, and i think i have found a legitimate answer to it. But first i must inquire what you think about this and give your insight on it : What defines a smart person? Is it how they talk, how they look, what they do, anything? And please do not go over to wikipedia to answer this, as i do not give the best answer to people who choose the easiest path. What is my opinion on this? I believe that smartness comes from ones ability to solve problems, quite simply, smart people are problem solvers. Please, feel free to share your opinions on this topic. Thanks!

Arent you confused between being smart, and being admired.
Very often the smartest people are those called lunatic, nutcase, demon-possessed, rotten apple, etc. Robert Fulton's invention for sailing on the ocean without sails or oars, was called Fulton's Folly.

Jesus was called every name in the book, by the people who eventually became terrified of him------"he must be destroyed"-----because the people were hailing him as king, and all he wanted to do, was cleanse the temple of his father. Smart and intelligence, well lets do ponder this a bit. Not being able to, nor would I sit and ponder this thought for awhile. They just are not the same thing in my book. There are all kind of smart people. Book smart, street smart,smart asses, just an example. Smart possibly being what one is in their area of confidence. One can be smart at something and look like a dumb *** in another area out of their boundary of knowledge. Knowledge now does that measure ones intelligence? To an extent yes but even IQ tests are not reliable at measuring ones intelligence though they can in theory. Then there is wisdom, now does one need to be smart and intelligent to be wise? Could it be that wisdom comes with actually living ones life and possibly going through their own personal hell or maybe that's where the bridge to insanity begins! Have you honestly thought about insanity? Who decides what insanity is or who is actually insane? Maybe I am smart, intelligent, and wise or I could be insane. After all being a mother, housewife, grandmother and running two businesses I certainly know how to solve problems, multitask and still have the time to enjoy my life but then again here I am on Yahoo Q&A. All though I am and have sucessfully acomplished all of the mentioned above. Surrely this too could have driven me utterly insane! Oh, sorry back to your question. Smart is what each indivual deems to be smart. I like to ramble and those that like to ramble on with me. Smart or insane just another thought for you to ponder!

I have always said that anyone can be intelligent if they are able to first acquire and then absorb; Complex, detailed or intricate information that is copacetic with what being human is. Enough so, that they can correctly implement and then teach what they have learned to another person.

I think that covers it full circle?

Everyone is intelligent in their own way. Everyone knows something better or more intimately than anyone else.

Now if you want me to define genius or exceptional intellectual aptitude, that is Not considered to be, or due to, the person being a Savant?

That, is a different animal.

Oh, and by the way... Monkeys can solve problems. It's true!

You have to be more specific to what extent you mean "Intelligent."

Yes, after narrowing it down it comes down to good problem solvers.... In any sense... in social interaction when facing the problem of simply starting a interesting coversation, to business problem solving, to life problem solving.... That's why wise people are the kind of people that are always giving advices... because they are problem solvers of daily life hazards.... Knowing facts is not smart or intelligent is just having good memory....

And like the other guy said... these are people that think outside the box... that expand their posivilities just to find a way to solve the problem...

But rather than trying to define a smart person, we must find a way of getting that kind of smart.... and it is very hard... because some might be problem solvers in social matters, but some others are problem solvers in science... and being really smart is having a balance of all kinds of knowledge, to be able to be a problem solver in a wide range of topics and situations... and reaching this goal can be damb hard.....

Smart people can apply the knowledge they gather to practical solutions of problems they encounter. It has to do with connecting the right knowledge to the right problem, judgment and in extreme cases, actual wisdom (very rare).

i think what defines a smart person is the ability to problem solve, see in colors not in black and white, is objective and open, knows what they want in the world and has no qualms about going after it!

i just want to say one thing that the line between truly intelligent people and a lot of those 'honors' students: there is a difference between discipline and intelligence. studying 4 hours a day doesn't make you truly smart, it makes you disciplined (unless you didn't need the studying. intelligence is being able to 'absorp' the information effortlessly.

p.s. no offense to honors students, i myself am an honors student

knowledge isn't a sign of intelligence, as i know many people who have an intricate knowledge of Seinfeld quotes and Friends episodes, yet couldn't do a math problem to save their life.
