I read a book once about a mother and son going off the road in a snowstorm. The Mom was killed, but the boy lived and ended up in a bear's cave for the winter. He suckled with the other bear cubs and learned to eat grubs, berries, etc. After the boy was rescued throughout his life he would visit this bear until he witnessed the bear being shot.

Does anyone know the title or author of this book?

It could be "Brian's Winter" by Gary Paulson. Can't promise you but it sounds like it...
