FORT LAUDERDALE, United States (AFP) - An autopsy on former model Anna Nicole Smith failed to establish what the late Playboy centerfold died of, a medical examiner said, while ruling out a violent death.

Smith, who fought for years for the estate of the wheelchair-bound, 89-year-old oil billionaire she married when she was 26, died Thursday in the town of Hollywood, Florida after being found unconscious in her hotel suite.

And while both Smith's estranged sister and mother have suggested that the buxom blonde bombshell's death may have been drug-related, the local Florida medical examiner said the cause could not immediately and conclusively be established.

"I cannot make a determination because there are a number of possibilities," Medical examiner Joshua Perper told reporters in Fort Lauderdale.

"At this time we do not make a determination on the cause or the manner of death," he said, adding that further tests would be carried out in the coming three to five weeks.

"The autopsy was able to exclude any type of physical injury" and also showed there was no sign of any pills found in the former model's stomach.

He said the only sign of trauma on Smith's body was a bruise on her back that she had suffered several days prior to her death.

Local police chief Charlie Tiger added that while no illegal drugs were found in Smith's hotel room, an undisclosed quantity of prescription medicines had been recovered.

While Perper said he couldn't rule out drugs playing a role in Smith's death, her mother Virgie Arthur told the ABC network she was certain her daughter was either using narcotics or abusing medication.

"I think she had too many drugs," Arthur said, adding "just like Danny," referring to Smith's son, Daniel, who died at the age of 20 in the Bahamas last year in a drug-related episode.

Arthur said the last time she saw Smith was in a television interview. "She was too drugged up... she was so wasted," Arthur said.

Asked in a CNN interview if she thought the death was drug-related, Smith's younger sister Donna Hogan said: "That would be my first guess."

"I'm not really shocked because of her lifestyle," an emotional Hogan added.

Smith herself told CNN in a interview several years ago that she had abused painkillers and had checked into a rehab.

Smith was born into poverty but lived a glamorous life, and her death echoed that of her idol, 1950s Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe.

"She wanted to be like Marilyn her whole life and ironically died in a similar manner," said her former lawyer, Lenard Leeds.

US media quoted attorney Ron Rale as saying Smith had still been suffering from depression over the death of her son Daniel.

He died just days after Smith gave birth to a girl, whose paternity is now being disputed by a former boyfriend, photographer Larry Birkhead, and her attorney and companion, Howard Stern.

A Los Angeles judge earlier turned down a request for an emergency DNA test on Smith's body by lawyers representing Birkhead.

His lawyer, Debra Opri, said Smith's body would be kept in Florida pending a court hearing on February 20, where a ruling over DNA collection would likely be made.

Whoever the father is, the five-month-old baby, Dannielynn Hope, inherits her mother's claim to her late husband's hundreds of millions of dollars.

Smith met oil billionaire J. Howard Marshall while working as a stripper at a Houston nightclub. The two married in 1994, but 14 months later he died at the age of 90.

She spent the next 12 years battling with her stepson E. Pierce Marshall over her late husband's fortune, a battle still unresolved after numerous court rulings.

Smith first came to prominence when she appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine in 1992, being voted Playmate of the Year the following year. She went on to replace Claudia Schiffer as the model for Guess Jeans.

Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger said prescription drugs were found in Smith's hotel room. However, Perper (chief medical examiner of Broward County, Florida) said no drugs were found in her stomach. ANS had been known to abuse perscription drugs.

"There are a number of possibilities," Perper said, including natural causes, a drug reaction or some combination of causes.Perper said there was no indication of blunt-force trauma, asphyxiation or other physical trauma. He said Smith had a small bruise on her back, which probably resulted from a fall in the bathtub earlier in the week. The medical examiner said his office is awaiting results of toxicological and other tests, but there were no drugs in Smith's stomach. He said if she had taken a large number of pills, some of the medicine would have remained in the stomach.

The medical examiner's office has reported that they intend to release the precise cause of death the week of March 5, so this week we should hear.

Basically.. nobody knows yet

They do not know the cause of death yet, the medical examiner said it would take weeks before they knew anything. However, she was buried next to her son last Friday in the Bahamas (papers said that it was "over the top"). The paternity testing on her daughter is still an issue on who really fathered the baby. Also just recently the father of Daniel (son that died in September) wants his son to be moved from the bahamas and relocated closer to him, so that raises a very big issue. I have kept up on this story since the beginning and anxious to see how this all turns out. Hope this is what you were looking for. Take care!!!

She was taking a nap and quit breathing. She was found by her body guards wife. She was in the hotel room... suppose to be keeping an eye on her, because Anna had been sick and with a fever of 105. She did CPR on Anna, then her body guard took over, when he got back to the room. They couldnt revive her. The autopsy hasnt been released yet. Theyre supposed to tell us tomorrow. Im going to guess it was complications with pnemonia worsed by the drugs she was taking. They may not mention that part.*

well on the news they interviewed her best friend and he said everyone knew she had pnemonia a few days before her death. the investigators think that because she had pnemonia her back hurt, and she thought it was a normal backache so she took pain relief pills, which only made it worse and ended up killing her.

The bloated, overweight tart was probably wasted on drugs and had a heart-related death.
Full medical examiners report has not been released.
