I have a new DVD/VCR recorder. The DVDs that I make will not play on any other player. I can't share my movies with my family. I have tried 2,4, and 8. I've used cheap and better quality DVD blanks and it doesn't seem to matter. The players are new and 2 years old; this too, doesn't seem to matter. Obviously, there is a unversal DVD that will play in all players (I'm going by the fact that the ones you buy will play in all players). Any ideas?

I have a Panasonic dvd/vcr recorder and it has a strange quirk that might also be involved here.

Read the instructions that came with your recorder to see if you have to "FINALIZE" a dvd after it's burned. I can record okay, but when it's full, I have to go into the menu and "FINALIZE" the dvd before I can play it on another dvd player.

Good Luck

Must be something really weirdly wrong with your recorder, kos practically any dvd burned with practically any burner WILL play in practically any player!!! And by "practically" I mean that there IS a REMOTE possiblilty that one or two dvds sometimes will fail to play.

So if it's NEW, I'd return it and get a different one.

When you are done recording, make sure you finalize the disk. Also, if you are not already doing so, use "r" and not "r/w" dvd's.
