I just bought a multi function center with fax but I thought it was the kind of fax I could plug into a phone line but it is the kind that faxes thru the pc somehow but it says i need to make sure I have a fax modem. I have no idea what that is or if I have one or not.

As long as you have a modem you're golden. If you have a slot for an RJ-11 connector on your computer plug that into a wall phone outlet.

Look on the fax machine! There should be a place to plug it into the phone line! When all else fails, read the manual!
Whats with you thumbs down dummies? If its a stand alone fax machine, it has a built in modem! RUBBERHEADS!

Right click My Computer and select device manager. All of the devices for your computer are there, and it should tell you whether of not you have a fax modem. If you are still unsure, search for your computer online by what made/model it is and check the specs.
