Have you called your doctor? My OB has told me that the first stage of labor (until you're dilated 4 cm) should not last any longer than 24 hours with a woman giving birth for the first time. But the nurses at the hospital when I had my first kept sending me home. I'd been in labor for 27 hours and had only dilated 2 1/2cm. My contractions were huge and I was in so much pain and they were about to send me home again when my mom threw a fit for me to the new nurse at shift change. My mom told the nurse that she didn't dilate on her own ever and needed pitocin to have all three of her children and wondered if it was hereditary. The nurse said yes! Finally she admitted me, but it was another 10 hours before I delivered, and only with the help of pitocin and an epidural.
What I'm trying to say is that the nurses at the hospital may try to send you home, but your doctor has the final say. If you can convince the doctor to let you stay, the nurses have to follow those orders. So call your doctor. Also, if your mom or other close relatives have had this problem in the past, tell them so, it may get you admitted sooner.
Meanwhile, if you're in as much pain as I was, there won't be much that you have the energy to do. But if you can get up and walk around a little, it may help.
Good luck, I feel for you. I have horrible memories of those first 27 hours of labor before they admitted me. But once you get admitted, it's actually easier. And I just had my second child and labor was only about 3 hours and not very painful at all. So don't get discouraged. You can do it!! Congrats.

I understand your frustration.
Besides from walking, and more walking and more walking, i think you will have to let nature take its course.
Its not much consolation, but it wont last for ever, your nearly there, bite your lip, and be the stong, powerful woman you are. Now you know why God creatated women for this job, men couldnt handle it.

This is what the nurse told me when I was in your situation seven years ago: "Go home and briskly walk for as long as you can. Then go home and have sex with your husband". Well, I took her advise and I gave birth two days later!

walking, sitting backwards on a kitchen chair or sitting on a gym ball will all help baby go further into your pelvis and therefore assist dilating. Good luck
