Alcohol is the best. It dries things out and that's what you're trying to do, dry the stump out. Just use alcohol and nothing else. No creams, lotions, etc.

The doctors recommends to clean the umbilical cord with Q-tips and water only unless it is infected, then you use alcohol. You must take another dry Q-tips after to remove excess water since the umbilical cord must be dry at all times in order to fall.

Lots of baby books tell you just to use soap and water, but I have found alcohol to be best. I buy alcohol wipes, the kind you would use to clean the area before an injection. They are cheap and you can get them from a pharmacy. They are great to have on hand to clean things (like nail clippers). After a bath, I would put on the diaper and then take a few seconds to clean up the area with a wipe. The alcohol also helps to dry up the area.

Alcohol kills germs and bacteria better than any other product on the market as far as I know. I just used some of the wintergreen alcohol and a q-tip around the base of the cord. If it starts to smell really bad then you may need to take her in cuz it could be infected....really important to clean it often (after every single diaper change). Good luck, it should fall off after a week or so then you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Dip a q-tip in alcohol and wipe around the cord each diaper change. It's worked dandy forever. Don't fix what ain't broken! Don't worry if it takes a month for it to fall off. My last one did and I cleaned it several times a day everyday for over a month. Every baby is different.

Nowadays the doctors and nurses tell you not to use anything and just let the umbilical cord just fall off. But the best way for it to heal better and quicker is to use alcohol and cotton swab everytime you change your baby's diaper, clean the umbilical cord. Believe me it works. My cousin and I had our babies around the same time. She did not use anything and I used the alcohol, in 1 week my son's umbilical cord was dry and fell off. Her daughter's umbilical cord is still hanging on....she's 3 weeks old!!!

Alcohol is over the counter, and yes, works best. Get that and a bag of cotton balls, and for $2, you're all set!

Alcohol. I used those 2 X 2 pads that you can get in the diabetic area of the pharmacy. The doc told me to use those with each diaper change. It was never infected.

Q-tips, cottonballs and rubbing alcohol, it dries it up so it falls off faster. Also, make sure when you put the diaper on, put it over the belly button... it is less painful for the baby!
