It is off by default. You have to turn it on for this feature to work. I would recommend booting up with your Windows disk and doing an OS repair.

Jason is wrong, the default of System Restore is "on".

For the questioner: do you know to turn it on? Here's how to check if it's on or not: Right click My Computer, Properties, System Restore (tab), if there is a check, it is "off", if no check, it's "on" (it sounds backward, isn't it, but that's how it is). So, if it's checked, uncheck it.

For your question how can you go back to the past. Nothing you can really do now. Is your computer messing up or not functioning right? If it's not, you're okay, just restart your computer, so Windows can creates the Restore Point.

Windows creates one Restore point evey 24-hour period, and one point everytime BEFORE you starting to install a program.
