When it was originally formed, the regiment had over 1,600 men. By the time they reached Gettysburg and Little Round top, their numbers were said to have been reduced to between 300 and 400.

According to Maine state records, though, there were 1,621 men enrolled, and they lost around 700 to wounds, disease or capture, which should put them at about 900 men at the end of the war. No figures are given fo desertion or other reasons for the drop in numbers.

Official Records of the Rebellion and other sources such as Joshua L. Chamberlain, Dejardiens, and John Pullen indicated the entire regiment at that time numbered from 335 to 365. On paper a fully manned CW regiment should have had 1000.
