virus, turn it off(power down), than start it up again, you should be alright for a few days, then it will happen again.

Is it a desktop or laptop?

If it is a laptop check to see if the power supply is working and properly connected. Also check to see if the battery is there and properly charged.

If the power supply isn't working and the boot up is on an improperly charged battery then the machine could shut down after start up (or at least go into power save mode).

This is just one possibility. Another could be that the power regulator in the laptop (this could apply to a desktop as well) is defective and shuts off when it gets ot a certain temperature.

Have the machine checked.
