It depends if you are a beginner or not. If you are a beginner, I would suggest buying one of those cheap violins because if you rent a violin, it would be worth less than how much you rented for it total. If you arent a beginner, I would suggest going in to a local violin shop and ask to buy a violin. Dont say your price range at first because many of the violin shops dont have price tags on their violins. Play and try out as many violins as you can, and look for a pure and powerful tone.

Those stringed instruments need a lot of concentration and thinking when you want to buy one, especially when the player is a beginner. Go to music stores in your area, play all the violins in the shop, don't be shy from the shop clerk because once he/she was a beginner like you, that's if he/she can play it even. If you're sure you want to keep up playing violin, I recommend to buy a violin of a reasonable price. Don't buy expensive ones because you may give up playing the violin. And don't buy cheap ones because after 2 months of playing and practicing you will find that the sound of it don't satisfy you, since cheep ones are usually bad. Then, compare prices, and pick up the one of the good quality and reasonable price.

I would definately suggest going to a local shop. My reason is that you should be able to hold it and play it before you buy it. A violin is like a car. You want to drive it before you buy it. Also, you don't want to end up buying a damaged violin. Hope that helps!

I have found an awesome site to get free samples. I get all sorts of new products that haven’t even hit the market yet. It is kind of like a beta testing site for new products. They test everything from food to beauty samples to video games. Here is the site.

I'd go through the Internet. Music 123 has some good deals. If you're just starting out you can't go wrong.
