It's from 'The secert Garden' by Frances Hogson Burnett. The chambermaid, Martha, explains to Mary that her mother once asked her that question after she had gotten mad about something.

Sounds like Lady Chatterley. D H Lawrence went in for a lot of that "regional accent" stuff. Got a bit tiresome after a while.
Spoilt all the good bits of that book for me!!
