The skills needed to perform the business functions of computer operations, systems development, and technical support are two fold.
First, one needs to understand how a particular field works. In such cases as a system administrator whom administers a system and keeps the system fully functional such as creating users, deleting users, backing up system information on a media device (tape drives or removable media such as DVDs, etc.), and the implication of downtimes (or fixing crashes for that matter), one must know the hardware, then software such as supported operating systems, and then the applications and company software that has been developed or bought. This is a task in itself. (Sun Microsystems has a new operating system software version out every year it seems now (which means for an IT person “back to school” to become certified once more for the current version… )
The second fold is the ridding of “basement people” as I like to call them. I can remember a time when words such as CD (DOS) or the use of a pipe (|)(Unix) confused people to no end with terms that were “geeky”. Such people rose just as a 'famous someone' did from the “basement”. However, today, the business world has changed, and has technology. This change meant having to create or learn business skills along side of the technology skills. These skills rely purely on communication, be it spoken or written.
