I don't know your taste.I'll try to recommend at least one from each category.

Bellarion the Fortunate by Rafael Sabatini.Brilliant swordfights, marvelous schemes and beautiful damsels abound in this fascinating tale of a condottiere or mercenary in 15th century Italy. As the story unfolds Bellarion a convent bred orphan youth is on the way to Padua for higher studies. He gets entangled in the affairs of Princess Valeria of Montferrat. And immediately takes up her cause. He acquits himself marvelously in the court intrigues at Montferrat. However the situation proved too hot and he escapes to Milan. In Milan he passes himself off as the son of Facino Cane, the great mercenary captain to escape the clutches of Gian Maria Visconti the bloodthirsty Duke of Milan. The real Facino Cane was amused at Bellarion’s deviousness and adopts him as his son.Under Facino Cane’s tutelage Bellarion emerges as one of the greatest mercenary captains of that age.

"Galloway," by Louis L'Amour, is part of the Sacketts series and takes place circa 1875-1879.Flagan Sackett manages to escape from being captured by the Indians, but without weapons and clothing, the task is a challenge for survival. Flagan and Galloway Sackett intend on starting a ranch, but the Dunns don't like the idea because they think they own all the land in the whole area and they don't like others coming in. The Dunns have pushed and scared others away in the past and they think they can do the same to the two Sackett brothers. They were wrong, as Sacketts from around the area all show up to help, as if fighting one is like fighting them all.
Although the book is called "Galloway," Flagon Sackett takes more of a leading role and narrates most of the story. The story switches back and forth, from being told by Flagon to a general narrator.

Brother Odd by Dean Koontz is the third book in his Odd Thomas series. Poor Odd has been through so much in the last couple of years. He lost Stormy, the love of his life, he's given up his job and his home to move into seclusion at a California mountainside monastery in hopes that his "gift" for seeing the dead won't be an issue up there. Instead he finds a poltergeist monk and evil spirits gathering around the young disabled children the monks (and nuns) care for. Odd knows that trouble is coming, and as usual he's the only one to recognize it.Can Odd mitigate the coming cataclysm? Of course he can, despite the arrival of murderous bone creatures and grim Death itself, for the monks include quite a contingent of reformed martial sinners, most memorably Brother Knuckles, formerly of the New Jersey Mob, and another guest, a mysterious Russian librarian from Indianapolis, who is more and different than Odd thinks he is.

The Vivero letter by Desmond Bagley.Jeremy Wheale's well-ordered life is torn apart when his brother is murdered by a mob hit man, whose bait was a family heirloom - a sixteenth-century gold tray. The trail takes Wheale from Devon to Mexico and the wild tropical rain forests of Yucatan. In dense jungle, he helps two archaeologists locate the rest of a fabled hoard of gold - treasure from Uaxuanoc, the centuries-old lost city of the Mayas. But his brother's enemies are on Wheale's trail, and with them are the Chicleros, a vicious band of convict mercenaries.

Well, I'm not sure what kind of books you like so I'll just list some that I have read.

Harry Potter 1-6 by JK Rowling
The Theif Lord by Cornelia Funke
Twilight and New Moon both by Stephenie Meyer
Just Listen, That Summer, The Truth About Forever, Someone Like You all by Sarah Dessen (You'll like these especially if you're a girl)
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 1-4 by Ann Brashares (also "chick books")

hope these helped. Next time, you might want to include that type of books you like to read ;-)

Try Dean Koont'z "The Taking" or "Frankenstein Series"

Jeffrey Deaver is an excellent author, I'd recommend any of his books.

Or go the opposite and dig out a classic that you haven't read yet... Call of the Wild, White Fang, Robinson Crusoe, etc

I just finished Kurt Vonnegut's "Mother Night" and it was the best book I've ever read and I've read a bunch of them. It's about a Nazi propagandist and what happened to him after World War II. It's an easy read, but has a lot of humour in it and keeps the reader guessing what happens next. I have been recommending it to anyone who'll listen.

Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles are the stuff. they're long but highly entertaining and read quickly - not overly challenging, either, I read them when I was in 7th grade. Also check out Ngugi wa Thiong'o if you're interested in Africa at all - it's fiction but with true points. Another is Michael Crighton's Travels. wonderful!

What do you like to read? It's hard to make good suggestions without knowing who "your authors" are in the first place.

My general suggestion is to read Laurie Halse Anderson's "Speak" - very powerful book. She has also written "Prom." "Catalyst" (which is set in the same town as "Speak") and "Fever 1793." And her new book, "Twisted" will be out in less than 2 weeks!
