A theme is an author's underlying message. He won't come out and tell you what the theme is, but after reading the story or book, you should be able to understand what it is.
Common themes in a book are change, relationships, friendships, loyalty, wisdom, etc...
For example, if your book is about a group of friends that have a bunch of conflicts but manage to stick together, your theme is "loyalty".
Of course, if you're in an honors class and have a pesky teacher, simple themes like the one's mentioned above won't cut it. Instead of saying "loyalty", think to yourself "What about loyalty?" The answer to this question is the true theme, such as "The difficulties of staying loyal", for example.
