They should be saying words at a year old, but they don't really start to communicate with you until 2. But it also does depend on the child.

I think it depends on the child and the parents. I have four kids who started talking at 2 or 3 months of age, but my sister didn't talk until she was 3 years old. I think that a child's drive to communicate makes a difference. Some babies really want to communicate, but some don't. Parents can help by listening and observing the baby. Does it look like they are trying to communicate? It also helps if the parent says the same one word every time you do something that is significant to the baby. For example: "bottle" every time you offer the baby a bottle.
Interestingly enough, while hearing children normally start talking in their first year no matter what language it is, babies who use sign language typically start communicating at 6 months. If you are eager to start communicating with your baby, you may want to check on some sign language to use with your baby. There are several sites on the internet that show video clips of signs.

it depends on what u mean by talk. My baby is 12 weeks old and she has been "talking" for several weeks now. No forming of words, but she will hold a baby babble conversation and sing along with whatever music is playing. But if you mean forming sentences and saying things like mama and dada, I would say about 8 months old. Thats at least from my experience around babies- and it is extensive

All babies are different....If you go by growth charts then your child should be cooing and smiling at about 2-3 months....before or at least by 12 months old your child should learn the mommy daddy, bye-bye and stuff like that....but when your a parent you notice that each child does things on their time. For instance my oldest daughter was saying ma by the time she was three months old and walking at nine months but my baby didn't start really talking until she was about 6 months and started walking after her first birthday. You can help your child by singing to them, reading books, pointing things out and telling your child what it is...there are plenty of ways to encourage your childs vocabulary.

Hi,
Every baby is a little different. According to my Mom I was 9 months when I first started using the right words at the right times. My husband was 11 months... My son says da-da (not just referring to Daddy, but to basically everybody that he likes) and he is only 3 and a half months old.
I got this quote from a website listed below in sources. I think it pretty much covers your question. See the website for more details:
"By two to four months of age, babies should coo (vowel sounds like ah or eh). By six months, babies will laugh out loud and jabber (consonant sounds like ba or ga). Finally at nine months, babies start to string together da-da-da or ma-ma-ma. By the first birthday, babies should be using "Dada" and "Mama" to mean Dad and Mom, and they should also be using at least one other word. Vocabulary builds so that by eighteen months, most children can say at least five words. By two years of age, children should be making simple, two-word sentences like "Daddy go" or "doggy bye-bye" and have a vocabulary of at least fifty words."

It's really different for every child. I know someone who's daughter could say "Hi, Dada" at 6 months. But, I believe most children start really talking around 1 or 2. My nephew is over 2, and I still really can't understand what he is saying.

First of all:
EVERY CHILD DEVELOPS DIFFERENTLY.
Your child starts talking to you right after birth, the only way they know how, by crying.
That said........ most babies start saying words, common ones like mommy daddy nummy ect... about 9 months old. Some eariler some later.
