I know that palmistry isn't astrology, but this was the closest category yahoo answers has for this question.

In western palmistry, if you are right-handed, then your left palm is an indication of your past history, your hidden personalities, and your potential of your strengths (or the dangers that might happen in your life). Your right hand will reveal your history, present, and future of life (destiny), and your major personalities. Or if you are left-handed, it's vice versa.
In chinese palmistry, males should look for left hand, females should look for right hand, as simple as that! Then the other hand should be your spouse's (not so sure of this point).

Your left hand changes if you change your plan
Example:
If you planned to live a long life you would have a long lifeline on your right hand
Then you start smoking your life line on your left hand side shortens
Then you give up smoking and you are back on track
That is why a good palmist will use both your hands to compare if you are on track or have slide off the track

When reading palms, you go by reading the dominant hand versus the non-dominant hand...whether that be your left or right. With the non-dominant hand, that is what is supposed to have happened/should happen. The dominant hand is what actually did/does happen.

I'm not sure which is which, but one hand reveals the past or what has been and the other reveals the future or what is to be.

Left is what you are born with and right is what you make of it - unless you're left-handed, then it's reversed.
