No, snails and slugs are separate but similar species.

Most terrestrial snail species as well as slugs, are hermaphrodites. They have male, as well as female organs in one collective genital apparatus. This organ system not only contains sexual organs in the narrow sense of the word, but also various auxiliary organs, that have respective tasks in different periods during mating. During mating they don't act as either male or female, they actually act as both at the same time. Weird eh?

Don't trust everything you see on Wikipedia. It's not always put in by reliable experts.

Okay...
No, slugs are not snails who have lost their houses! But they are very closely related. Both are members of the class Gastropoda and can be found on land or in water.

You're kinda right about the mating thing. Most land snails have both boy and girl parts and can go either way. In fact their mating ritual can go on for up to 12 hours so I guess it takes a while to decide who's going to go on top!

With slugs it's weirder and will probably make most blokes eyes water.
I will copy and paste it direct from Wikipedia cos I don't think you'll believe me otherwise. Look the other way if you're prone to fainting:
..."Slugs are hermaphroditic, having both female and male reproductive organs...A commonly seen practice among many slugs is apophallation, when one or both of the slugs chew off the other's penis. The penis of these species is curled like a cork-screw and often becomes entangled in their mate's genitalia in the process of exchanging sperm. Apophallation allows the slugs to separate themselves. Once the penis has been removed, the slug remains female for the rest of its life. Various species of slug can also reproduce via tiny "darts" of sperm which they fling in the direction of their mate's genitalia"...

So there you go!

PS: Thank you for your rather bizarre question. I had nothing to do this evening, and now I have filled some time by looking up the mating habits of slugs. It's a funny old life!

I always thought that a slug was a snail who sold "THE BIG ISSUE". Sorry but I am very bored at the present and it looks like several people have already given you correct answers.

Fifi is quite right about the process that some slugs go through. Certain species, most notably the banana slug, do chew off the genitalia of their mate after they are done.

I've found a lovely link detailing this process which includes a VIDEO of the post-mating horror for those who doubt it. Cover your eyes, men, it's terrible.

Slugs, snails...both slimy anyway. They come and go where ever they want..unless someone steps on them.
