Bosque Redondo is the first modern concentration camp. It was invented in 1862 by General James H. Carlton, of the Union army, as a way to clear the Dine' [Navajo] out of their ancestral land so that he and his supporters could search for gold in the area between the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico and about halfway across the Arizona Territory.

Of course, the "official" reason for the forced relocation was that the Dine' were raiding sheep flocks and horse herds of the good and loyal citizens and had to be controlled in order to keep the New Mexico Territory in the Union.

Leading a force of 1500 US volunteers from California, and with the help of mercenaries such as Kit Carson, the Dine and Apaches were rounded up and made to walk from their homelands to Bosque Redondo, about 175 southeast of Santa Fe.

This is referred to as "The Long Walk" - about 1/5 of the people forcibly relocated died during the forced march.

Bosque Redondo is south of Santa Rosa New Mexico. It is well worth visiting, to get a sense of the desolate location for the concentration camp.
