My current bank has had some computer problems quite a bit lately... It's so embarrassing to go out and order a meal and know I have $600 in the bank but have it come back declined. It has happened several times and they always appologize, but I have come to the point that I HAVE to get a new account to save my sanity!

I think a little while back I saw ads on TV for FREE Checking with INTEREST and I believe it was at compass but I'm not sure. I know I definitely dont want to pay a fee... So which banks do you think would be the best options? Thanks!

Yes, you're right. There are accounts that not only DON'T charge you a monthly fee, but require NO minimum balance, and PAY YOU interest!

I have been using Netbank as my primary checking account (pays about 1% or so) for about 2 years. Now, I have to admit... not being about to go down to the corner and talk to a teller is a bit rough, but at least I sleep at night knowing that I am earning interest even on my free checking!

I also saw on CNBC ads for emigrantdirect.com They also do free interest bearing checking I think.

Lots of banks offer free checking, but read the fine print. Some require direct deposit to wave the fees or have other catches. Start with a bank that's close to your home or work and ask about what accounts they offer. You should never have to pay a fee if you play by their rules. For savings, use an Internet bank like EmigrantDirect.com.

You can go to FDIC.gov or just type in your search engine bank rating.

Not all are the same. 1st think about which are in your normal area of daily travel. If you live in NYC you wouldn't want to bank at a bank in Los Angles California. Most have Tiers depending on how much money you have. Some offer free check books and on line checking. Some have Bill pay by the month or transaction. If it were me I'd look for something close to home that offers On line checking, free check books or inexpensive, No Minimum balances and On line Bill Pay either free or for so much no matter how many on line bills you pay.

You might even get a toaster by opening a new account somewhere...

Good luck...

I have compass and I like it alright. Probably any bank at this point would be better. Wachovia actually has been rated no 1 in customer service. If I were looking for a new bank, that's the one I would go with.

Bank of America is the best because they have free checking as long as you pay one bill online.
