the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted. The part of the brain with disturbed perfusion no longer receives adequate oxygen. it causes brain cells to die or be seriously damaged, impairing local brain function. Stroke is a medical emergency and can cause permanent neurologic damage or even death if not promptly diagnosed and treated.
hope that made sense xx

A stroke, medically knowm as a CVA -cerbrovascular accident, is when blood flow to a part of the brain is interupted. This causes a lack of oxygen to reach the cells of the brain in the area affected and causes them to be permanently damaged and /or die. Strokes are either ischemic, thrombolytic, embolic or haemorrhagic.
Ischemic means that the blood vessel occludes (blocks up) due to disease.
Thrombolytic means a thrombus (blood clot) occludes the vessel
Embolic means blockage of the vessel due to a particle in the blood steam, ie cancer cells, fragment of blood clot, air, fat or particle of plaque
Haemorrhagic means bleeding of a vessel into surrounding tissue. This either causes a blood clot to form and causes pressure on the brain or bleeds excessively to prevent perfusion of the brain.
This impairs the fuction of the brain in that area. Depending on where this occurs and to what extent/ how big an area, as to the physical manifestations of the stroke. Some people show no signs at all of having a stroke and some can be completely incopacitated by it. Stokes can even kill the patient. Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States and industrialized European nations. On average, a stroke occurs every 45 seconds and someone dies every 3 minutes.
Risk factors include advanced age, female gender, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, atrial fibrillation, and thrombophilia. Cigarette smoking is the most important modifiable risk factor of stroke

It only paralyses one side of the body if it is a stroke of the cerebrum.I had a stroke on the cerebellum(cerebellar infarct) and was lucky that I was not paralysed. It depends on which half of the cerebrum is affected.A stroke on the right side of the brain affects the left side of the body,a stroke on the left side of the brain affects the right side of the body and also the speech.
Each half of the brain (L&R) controls the opposite side of the body.

Stroke is the condition resulting in an interruption of blood flow to the brain. It can be either embolic (blood clot) or hemorrhagic (bleeding). The side of the body affected is the opposite side of where the interruption of blood flow is...If the clot or bleed is on the left side of the brain, the right side of the body will be affected, and vice versa.

A stroke is a blockage of blood to the brain, normally caused by blockage of the cartoid artery (brain's main source of blood) or a bursted blood vessel. Depending on which side of the brain did not receive the blood, could answer the question to why it only paralizes one side of the body

A stroke is caused by the clogging of an artery that delivers blood to parts of the brain. A stroke is most damaging when the blocked artery is a major one, providing blood to one whole side of your brain. When that happens the control of the muscles on that side of the body is affected.

Astroke is something, for example a blood clot, which deprives the brain of oxygen. This kills the surrounding brain cells.
Each side of the body is controlled by one side of the brain, so the damage in the brain causes some paralysis on the side of the body it controls.

It's a cerebrovascular incident resulting in permanent neurological deficit. That's why it can paralyse you on one side of your body. I know cases in which the person has been left deaf and even blind depending on which side of the brain it happened. Not the same as an Ischaemic Attack as the person usually recovers from them within 24 hours.

A stroke is basically something that deprives the brain (or part of it) of oxygen. It can be bleeding, or a blood clot, or even an air bubble. It is normally very localised, so does not affect the whole body.
