it sounds like you have a blown head gasket. I would have some one run a compression test on it to make sure.

Look on the carb it has a mounting between the manifold and the body of the carb made of a rubbery substance,this splits and lets in air.I had the same problem,its common on polo's,mine was an old 1983one.

i would suggest checking the valve clearances when the engine is hot in case one or more valves are being held open due to a reduced gap when hot. this will depend on weather the engine has buckets & shims or hyd tappets. howeaver the principle is the same. as already suggested a compression test would assist in evaluation when hot. this engine suffers from worn valve guides which also cause this

it could be a fuel problem, like dirt in the line or carburetor, or electrical break down maybe the leads or the dis cap, or even just bad plugs. but there is not too much wrong if it starts and runs ok at lower speed. maybe this can help you brian
