in america womens sizes are 2 sizes smaller than the uk so an english 8 would be an american 4

hi i work for clarks and an english size 8 ladies is actually a us size 9 1/2. It roughly works out 2 sizes bigger than english sizes as a rule. x

About a 4, but individual lines fit differently. Generally go down two sizes from UK sizes. Try to get a waist measurement on the garment too if possible. Some US lines have larger waists than others, although that is an easy alteration.
If you are shopping designer, go up a size, (making you a 6 in US sizes) they usually cut small and are snug/small in the hip area.
