My own hypothesis, but by no means tested, is that dreams are simply the cognitive part of our brain passively interacting with material in short term memory. It doesn’t serve a purpose in and of itself, it is simply a by product of our minds structure. The “dream” itself is some sort of elevated form of this. I would be interested if anyone know of anyone that would disprove what I said, such as MRI scans showing the cognitive portions of the brain are dormant in sleep. If you could cite a source you would be my hero.

It is largely unknown what causes us o dream, but one theory is that it is our bodies way of processing all the days happenings and also it is believed that protein synthesis is increased during REM sleep (the period when we dream)

it is a natural and necessary aspect of sleep. We all dream about 5 times every night. It's just we do not remember most.
