"Paddle to the Sea" by Holling Clancy Holling, a wonderfully illustrated books that followed the travels of a little carved indian in a canoe around all of the American Great Lakes. Besides being an exciting story, it taught you about the geography and history of all of the area. All of Holling's books are great for kids.
