It is exactly what "Team Chief" said. The first of these medals were given in 1854 to the graduates of Holten High School (Danvers, MA).

What a wonderful family memento. I strongly suggest you visit the website mentioned by "Team Chief" and make a short descriptive essay about the medal. Put your little note in the same box as the medal and keep in a safe place. Your children's children will love you for it.
