first let me say: PLEASE DON'T PLUCK THEM TOO THIN! Thanks for letting me get that out. you pluck them with the arch of your natural arch. you point out your arch by drawing a slight diagonal line from the center of your eye, towards your ear. The middle should extend a a little bit out from the corner of your tear duct, and the end closest to your ear should extend a little bit from the edge of your eye. be careful not to pluck too much in the middle - it makes your forehead look huge. maybe this site will help: http://www.ehow.com/how_2824_pluck-eyebrows.html

Universally attractive eyebrows will follow the same basic rules:

- The brows should be full and rounded at their starting point and gradually, gracefully taper to a sharp point at their end

- There should be no excess hairs anywhere around the brow itself (excess hairs would be any hairs that do not directly contribute to the main section of hairs)

- The natural contor of the eye socket's top edge should be used as a guide for the arch of the eyebrow (ideally, the highest point of the brow will line up with the pupil when you're looking straight ahead but if that will look odd for any reason, choose to follow the eye socket instead)

- If your eyes are set one eye-width apart**, the eyebrows should start at the inner, tear-duct corner of your eyes and follow the aformentioned guidelines to end at the outside corner of your eyes or far as possible (allow a few free hairs [ones that fall in line with the brow] at the end of the brows for a feathered, lengthly look)

** Narrow-set eyes should have eyebrows that are plucked slightly further apart than that (1/5 to 1/4 of an inch from the corner of the eye) while wide-set eyes should be plucked at about the same distance past the inside corner (following these directions will help you attain a balanced look in case you have slighly unbalanced eyes)

Use a good light source and a clean mirror while you work and let your instincts guide you. You appear to be totally new to the idea of plucking but don't worry: you'll know exactly how you want your brows to look in less than a year.

If you just can't seem to get it right, make a trip to a salon and have them wax or pluck your brows and if you're satisfied with the look, just make sure you keep up with the hair growth.

Good luck!

Here's the link to the best article re: eyebrow shaping I've found:
http://www.cosmeticscop.com/learn/makeup.asp?ID=175
It will show you how to choose a shape and how to pluck your brows properly.

You might want to get them done by a professional to have them plucked, waxed or threaded after letting your brows grow out for 2-4 weeks. A professional will create a flattering shape that you can maintain at home.

Explain that you want a natural looking brow and let the aesthetician know if you are on any medications. (ex. Retin-A thins the skin so users should avoid waxing.)

Waxing is fast but threading is one alternative I've found it to be far less irritating than waxing. Some aestheticians will just pluck stray brows if you ask.

If your brows aren't too bushy, you could just skip plucking, etc.

Instead, use a lash/brow comb and comb your eyebrow hairs upward. Trim any long ones that really stick out with small cuticle scissors. Trim individual hairs & take it slow. Step back and check the results frequently.

You can use a clear brow gel to shape them and keep them in place. Maybelline makes a good one.

BTW plucking used to really irritate my skin & I've found a few things that help:

1. Good tweezers - Tweezerman are the best. Really good tweezers help you get a good grip & pluck in one tug.
2. Plucking after a shower when my pores are open & my skin is free of makeup, moisturizer.
3. Following up with toner.
4. Cleaning tweezers with alcohol.
5. Using chilled aloe vera gel to sooth my brows after I'm done.
