My husband and I are having another child. The sonogram showed it to be a boy, and I wanted to name him Stephen, after the Stephen in the Bible that was martyred in the book of Acts. It is pronounced like Steven but it is spelled with a ph instead of a v. My husband says it is a girls name when you use the ph. What do you all think?

No, he's thinking of Stephanie, because when people feminize the name Steven, it's never spelled Stevenie. You know? But Stephen is definitely a boy's name.

It's an Anglo-Saxon "PH" and contains one f. The more common "PH" is usually Italic with two f. Old English rule for midword f was the basis for the letter V like the word OF said "uV"! Hence Stephen is pronounced Stee-Ven!

Hasn't he ever seen "Family Matters", when Steve Erkel turns into Stephen. Although they pronounce it differently in the show, Stephen is a boy's name. Stephanie would be the female name.

He's wrong. It's a boys name. Look it up on babynames.com. My six-year-old boy cousin's middle name is stephen.
