If you go to other translations, you find that it is not rape in question, because the girl ddid not "cry out", or fight back, or make any type of accusation...she is a willing participant in the situation. If yougo to the prior verses, you will find out that if a man rapes a woman, either virgin or married, and she "cries out" or resists, or reports it, the man gets stoned to death...and they used BIG fist-sized stones back then, not pebbles. If the woman was married or engaged, and didn't cry out, then as she was a willing participant, they BOTH were stoned. But in the verse you are talking about, the woman is not married, or engaged, and doesn't resist or report it...she is willing. That is why they are to marry...any more questions?

Here we go another Christian hating liberal. This was the old testament, I think, my thoughts I am not a bible scholar, that this was going to be harmful enough punishment to the man to discourage such things. I am sure 50 pieces of silver was lot of money back then, and if you were a rapist, raped a young woman, do you think she will love you? I doubt it, but now this man has to live with this woman for the rest of his life, who probably will spite and undermine him all of her days.
