Anyone from Luxembourg on here who can answer a question about public transport?

I think I may have a problem. I'm going to Luxembourg with work and I said I wanted to see the country while I was there and maybe do some walking. So one of our guys in our Lux office has booked me a hotel in a place called Mullerthal.

Now he knows I don't have a car, so I was expecting it to be somewhere with good transport links. But I've just looked it up and it's about 30 miles from the airport and doesn't seem to be anywhere near a railway station or even a bus route. Of course this isn't helped by the fact that I don't speak French or German and so the public transport websites make no sense to me.

Help! How do I get from Luxembourg Airport to Mullerthal? And how do I get back again on a Sunday morning? Do I really need to get a taxi both ways? If yes, how much is this likely to cost?

Don't get me wrong, the place looks lovely. But what with the language difficulty (do people outside of Lux town speak much English?) and it being a Sunday, I'm worried I'll miss my plane!

I live in Luxembourg.

I think The Mullertharl region is known as Little Switzerland...and the center of that area is the town of Ecternach. If it's in Ecternach, or every close, then bus 110 and bus 111 go to Ecternach from Luxembourg City.

Yes there are buses, but unless the hotel is in Ecternach or a big town like that, you will be relying on taxis to get everywhere.

Probably, if relying on public transport only, you need to get a taxi to the Gare, or bus 16 to the Gare, then take a bus going in your direction.

I think you will need to call the hotel, and find out how close it is to Ecternach, or Mersch ... then you can plan a route from Luxembourg to Ecternach or Mersch, followed by another bus if necessary and possible, or a taxi.

If you are working in Luxembourg City, then really I suggest that you cancel the hotel in Mullertharl unless it is right in the center of Ecternach ...

Then you can try to book a hotel in Luxembourg and make a trip on the Saturday up to the Ardennes for some hiking, maybe in the Osling area or around Borscheid Castle...

You will have a fantastic day's walking in that area!

Alternatively, you could take the train from Luxembourg City on Friday night, stay in the Victor Hugo Hotel overnight in Vianden, and after looking around Vianden on Saturday morning, take bus 663 to Clervaux to visit the Family of Man (the world famous UNESCO Heritage exhibition) and the Battle of the Ardennes museum at the chateau there, and get the train back to Luxembourg city on Sunday morning for your flight.

There are hundreds of walks you can do, and Luxembourg has the highest density of nature walks in Europe. So you could stay out of site of a town for a day with no trouble! I've hiked all over the country myself, but I'd still recommend you take the Vianden and Clervaux option !

Then you can do some walks, like the walk up over the hills to Goebleshmule (10 kms) where you get the train back, or carry on to Michelau via Borscheid Castle ...

Then it's easy to get he train back on Sunday morning to Lux-City, and jump on Bus 16 to the airport for your flight

Not living in Luxembourg but have been there. The area you speak of is a rural country area. I'd say your best bet would be to head to Echternach or Diekirch (sizeable towns) and then get a cab.

You're likely to encounter few language problems in Luxembourg, most people speak a variety of languages in cluding English. Never had a problem being understood anywhere in any situation.

Luxembourg is well served by public transport but you'll need local advice on the best routes, costs etc. You should try the Office of National Tourism. They have a branch in London. I've been there. If you're in London call in, if not call them. I've been there, they're very helpful.

I don't know if I can help. My sister lived in Luxembourg for a number of years, and I visited her several times while she was there. It is a beautiful place, but virtually if you don't have a car, you're out of luck. At least that's what I've found. It's easy enough to get around downtown, in the center of town just by walking, and it is gorgeous, but anything else, you're stuck taking a taxi. Lux is pretty small, as you probably know, the country is virtually just the city itself and the surrounding suburbs. I wish I could be of more help. Good luck anyhow.
