Go to an outdoor or sporting goods or camping supply store, and look for a good one. The LED kind are very good for both brightness and battery life.
From your choice of words, I'm guessing you're in the UK, so I can't recommend stores (I'm in the USA). One great brand I've used is called a maglite - it has a solid, STRONG case that will last forever. I don't know if they've switched over to LEDs, though. If they have, and you can find one, buy it, and you'll be very happy with it.

Buy a quality LED torch (from a store like Maplin) for about £12-£15 and keep some spare batteries in the car. It will take up little space in the glove box and provide a good amount of light. I used to keep a big Maglite in my car but the modern LED torches are far smaller and brighter than all but the six D cell Maglite. As a one off purchase £15 is a reasonable price and I only suggest spare batteries for peace of mind as LED torches often use an unusual size (but they last a long time) and I am paranoid. Avoid LED torches from Ebay as they tend to be of lower quality in my opinion.
The best ones usually have only one large LED rather than lots of small LED's and use a funny camera type battery ("123" 3 volt) instead of the usual 1.5 v pencil batteries.

The Magic Torch. This is the best by far for the kind of use that you need. This torch needs no batterys as its a wind up, has 12 led bulbs im telling ya its really bright.
The only place i can say where you can get it is the shopping channel QVC cos thats where i got mine.
I would recomend that you get this, as its bright has a long life span is tough, can work under water, and needs no batterys or anything, it even charges your mobile phone.

Without a shadow of a doubt a maglite.
i use a 4d cell maglite and i live in the country and at night when there is no light pollution and its as dark it can be seen for miles.
They expensive but well worth it and they are constructed so well. The batteries last forever if you use a high power battery such as duracell.
Link below to buy online and also maglite's website although you can buy them in halfords.

I agree with the above answers. I like the mag-lite and have several. But, in addition, you could go to an auto parts place and get a 12V handheld spotlight with a million candle power. That should light up anything you want to see. Besides, if you are lost at night in a dark area, you can use it to light up street signs. I have both in the truck.

The small maglite is good, but I have a powerful torch that I plug in to the cigarette lighter, that gives light. Halfords stock them.

think of of it this form: in case you persevered to pay the $159 a month, you does no longer could pay 5K now....it is why coverage is a robust concept. each so often you could spend a splash to save plenty. people who're sensible with money continuously have a splash stored for whilst a wet day happens. undesirable issues take place, yet you could have been extra perfect arranged. by skill of how, the place I come from, a 1998 Honda Civic with eighty,000 miles isn't nicely worth something close to 5K.

a small hardwood log and some matches. Soft woods like pine are not good. Ensure the wood is properly aged, not green or you will get a lot of smoke. I would keep your windows rolled down.
