Don't go with anything smaller than about 4" as adult for the cichlid.
My suggestion would be a fairly large tank, like 50 gallons, with the CAE and a couple yellow labs or blue haps, both of which can be found at petsmart.
I don't know how bit your CAE is right now, but they do grow to 6" in captivity, so nothing smaller than 40 gallons would really be suitable for him and another fish or two.

As far as the cichlids go that Petsmart sells you should not get them for anything less then the 50 gallon tank already recommended once - most of the common varieties are quite aggressive and many are large. Many of those tiny cichlids you see in those tanks grow to a foot long or more and need tanks of 75 gallons or more. Plus the CAE needs a big tank due to its own aggression.
Cichlids are territorial, aggressive, and tend to have specific needs. They are not for beginners and should be bought only after research on how to keep and stock them. They're lovely fish, but too often misunderstood.
A better idea is to decide what the largest tank size you can afford and fit in your home, and then choose appropriate species of livestock for it.

I also have a 30 gallon tank with 3 chiclids, a million pleco, and 3 snails in it. its been advantageous for over 8 months. counting on the fashion of chiclids you have you could could pass them right into a greater tank as they strengthen. ive been raising chiclids for extra or less 3 years, as they strengthen to important for the I also have a pair of fifty 5 gallon tanks that i pass them into, then initiate with new ones interior the 30.

personally, i wouldn't go with that combination
cichlids are fiesty and fight back, chinese algae eaters are aggressive fish once they get over 4" and really love the taste of eye balls and slime coats. in my opinion CAE's should be kept in species tanks only.
small tanks are harder to stock and look after than larger tanks. get a tank, 15 US gallons minimum, start it cycling (see link below), and then research what fish are suitable for the tank you have. and remember to look at the sizes of fish FULL GROWN and buy them based on that.
CAE's alone need 20 US gallons minimum

The general rule is one gallon per one inch of fish. If there is 5 inches of fish, the minimum tank size you should get is 5 gallons. Keep in mind that your fish will grow too, so anything bigger won't hurt.
Ciclids usually grow to about 3-4 inches, and some of them can be aggressive. Talk to the people at the pet store and they can give you an idea of the best type of ciclid to get.
