The "Others" work for a secret goverment agency lie MI5 or CIA or the NSA. The are on the island to oversee/conduct and experiement in human behavior.

The Others are the ones that were on the island before the plane crashed. They were keeping some of the members from Lost hostage. They still have Jack.

i do all the time. they r the other people on the island who have been there since before jack sawyer and all of them arrived. watch the snow u will c what im talking bout

they are people who have access to the main land and live on the other side of the island and they even have cable! they are conducting experiments etc

they haven't really explained who they are...all we know is that they're people doing experiments on another island but they live on the same island as the survivors...
