Just give him milk, if your doctor said its ok to start on juice then only use the juice intended for babies. You don't know what's inside flavored water.

We just discussed this in prenatal class. If she is breast feeding, water is not needed. If she is formula feeding and is finding he is getting constipated, you can mix it with a bit more water I believe...But, never straight water. It can cause an electrolyte imbalance in your baby and can be harmful. Flavor water would be even worse to give her baby. You should ONLY give breast milk or formula to a baby until 6 months. Only after this period can you start on cereals etc...but I am not so sure when you should start on water but I know if would not be now. Oh and FYI, older folks always gave their babies water and might say it's fine but research shows it's not fine.

It concerns me that "your friend" is giving a 5mo water anyway. They need all the nutrients they can get in their first year. Water only fills their little belly's, which could stop him from eating enough formula/food and not getting enough nutrients. If you give the baby water all the time, it can cause weight loss, which is not something you really want to do in the 1st year. Stick to the formula and if you have any more questions, ask the doc. They are always happy to get a phone call.

She honestly shouldn't even be giving him water period. He doesn't need it! Babies under a year old get ALL their fluid and nutritional needs met by breastmilk or formula. Babies also have small stomachs that get filled easily, and if they're full on water, they'll refuse their feedings.
But, to answer her initial question, if she feels she MUST force him to drink water that he doesn't need or want, DO NOT give flavored water, there's all kinds of additives in there.

Some pediatricians say that adding a small amount of sugar helps get the babies to drink water...it adds a little bit of flavor to it. As for flavor water, no, I would not recommend it. She should talk with her pediatrician and see what options he/she has to give.
I had this same problem with my son when he was born.
Hope this helps.

Water down apple juice or a different flavor of Juicy Juice. I gave my son water at around that time, the doctor told me to.

She should not have been giving him water in the first place. According to the American Board of Pediatrics, water can cause babies to go into seziure-like convulsions due to the imbalance of electrolytes in their system. Even at 6mos (which you said he will be in one week) all they need is milk. 6mos is when foods should be INTRODUCED, not switched to. Advise your friend to stop the water and continue either breastfeeding or formula feeding. She should discuss the introduction of foods with her child's doctor to know which foods are best, and to make sure they are aware of what is going on with her child. I am sure they'd be "pleased" to know she has been giving him water this whole time.

he doesnt need water, if he doesnt want to drink it then dont give it to him. if he is thirsty he will drink it. just give him breast milk or formula. Never give a baby bottled water. Flavored or not. It should only be distilled or tap water (if you have city water). No bottled water.

it's absolutely fine for babies to drink water, it stops them getting constipated and is very good for keeping their skin clear and healthy. A lot of babies can get thirsty between feeds. I wouldn't add anything to it, if he's drinking water on its better not to encourage a sweet tooth and add anything. As for some of you, she didn't say she was REPLACING formula with water, my goodness some of love to point the finger!

The baby does need to continue drinking water. I'd give him distilled water, if possible. If suddenly he's refusing plain water, I would dilute his juice with two parts water and see if that makes it more palatable for him. Don't think that would hurt, but please check first with his doctor.
