Annuals have a lifespan of one year.

Biennials have a lifespan of two years. Pansy's and Petunias are biennials, although in some colder climates they will winter kill and not grow back the second year.

Perennials have a lifespan of three or more years. In temperate zones, non-woody perennials have a top that will die off and they grow back the following spring from the root crown. Trees are also perennials, although in the botanical world, Perennials are generally classified as non-woody plants.

Evergreens retain their foliage year round. Some have needles such as the Pine and Spruce, while others are broadleaved like Holly and Oregon Grape.

Conifers propagate by bearing cones which house and protect their seeds. Most Conifers are evergreen, but there are a couple of varieties that are deciduous (lose their needles in the winter).

Annuals last one season and die in the fall/winter. Some annuals self seed so the will grow new plants from seed the next season. Perennials continue to grow year after year but may go dormant during the winter. As an example, a rose bush, or a azaleas are perennials, a daisy or petunia are annuals.
A nice garden may have a mixture of both, perennials with annuals added for a splash of color.

In flowers, Annuals last for one season. Generally speaking, they're cheap, colorful, and are in bloom all season long. Perennials last for multiple seasons. They're more expensive initially, normally only flower for a few weeks, but provide great variety. Biinneals, last for two years, often growing one year and producing the second year. The final catagory are bulbs which are usually either spring producing (planted in the fall) or summer/fall producing (planted in the spring). Bulbs will last for multiple years but generally get weaker over time.

Perennials by definition means lasts 3 or more years or self renewing. Annuals(need to be replaced annually) live and die in one season like seasonal flowers.

An annual is a plant that will grow and die in one season. A perennial is a plant that will grow, die back, the regrow again the following season. As far as what will grow year round it really depends where you live. In northern Canada, only houseplants will continue to grow year round.

The only thing good for year round (unless you are in the tropics) is an evergreen... even they go to sleep in the winter but they stay green if they've had enough water in the fall to keep them.
