My curiosity about numbers and the impact they have in our lives has recently been peeked. I want to read into this more, I need a good work of liturature to work from, but I do not know where to begin. Any ideas?

Numerology

The mystical attraction of basic qualities of numbers resulted in strange theories about magical powers that could be invoked or discovered by carrying out certain arithmetical operations. Such a belief, based on an idea of Pythagoras that all facts can be reduced to numbers, results from a failure to understand the true nature of the concept of number.

In applying numerology to a person's name, for example, there are many different systems in this “art” for assigning numbers to the letters of the alphabet, adding them up and arriving at a series of qualities, characteristics, and specific facts that are said to apply to that person. The dubious nature of the practice becomes obvious.

Three of the most popular systems among many, many such systems to determine “name numbers” are shown here:

A = 1 1 1
B = 2 5 2
C = 3 6 3
D = 4 9 4
E = 5 3 5
F = 8 8 6
G = 3 8 7
H = 5 3 8
I = 1 9 9
J = 1 9 1
K = 2 6 2
L = 3 5 3
M = 4 7 4
N = 5 7 5
O = 7 1 6
P = 8 5 7
Q = 1 6 8
R = 2 9 9
S = 3 3 1
T = 4 8 2
U = 6 8 3
V = 6 3 4
W = 6 3 5
X = 0 9 6
Y = 1 6 7
Z = 7 5 8

The third column of numbers represents what is known as the Pythagorean system. All of these systems require the user to add together each of the digits representing each letter in the name, then to add the digits of the resulting number, and repeat that process until a number less than 10 has been arrived at. This final digit is interpreted according to the following table:

1 —— action, aggression, ambition, leadership, purpose
2 —— balance, passivity, receptivity
3 —— brilliance, gaiety, versatility
4 —— dullness, endurance, steadiness
5 —— adventure, instability, sexuality
6 —— dependability, domesticity, harmony
7 —— knowledge, mystery, solitariness
8 —— material success, worldly involvement
9 —— great achievement, inspiration, spirituality

It can be seen that there is no standard and no consistency in numerology——let alone rationality——but it provides an easy method for the naive person to play a satisfying game without having to apply any intellectual powers to the matter.

Gematria is a form of numerology which employs the Hebrew alphabet, in which all the letters also have numerical values.
Modern numerologists, quick to adopt new technologies to prove and enlarge old claptrap, have now turned to a computer number system, the American Standard for Coded Interchange of Information (ASCII), for further deep meaning of the alphabet.

Introductory Numerology
Presently, the practice of numerology follows certain sets of principles obtained through deductions and additions of birth, month and year numbers, calculating the numerical values of the letters, vowels and consonants in a name and applying some more formulas based on these values. But it has no clear cut method of predicting the events.

The present period is witnessing a boom in numerology and a good number of numerologists are cropping up every day. Each of them differs vehemently from the other on the interpretation of numbers of destiny, challenges, pinnacles and other concepts. Several books have been written detailing the various concepts of numerology but all of them explain the same concepts in a slightly different way.

Whatever is the interpretation, one is forced to question the very logic of some of these principles and concepts as they are contradictory in nature. For example, think of the so called heart’s desire number which is obtained by adding up all the numerical values of vowels in a person’s birth name. It is said that the numerical values of the consonants in the same name, when added up, produce the personality number. As per the view of several numerologists the world over, a person is always guided by a permanent desire or by a limited set of desires representing the heart desire’s number obtained as described above.

First of all, there is no limit to desires. They change every second of the minute, every minute of the hour and every hour of the day depending on the circumstances. It is an universally accepted fact that a person’s thoughts or desires reflect his mind which echoes his heart. A thought or desire has its base in a mind which has a direct link with the heart. If the heart of a person thinks of or desires something, he will take a decision for the fulfillment of his thought or desire and then action follows. If action does not follow, what does it mean? It conveys that a decision has not been taken and that the thought has been abandoned or desire killed. When a thought has been abandoned or a desire killed, it no longer exists in the mind. And the heart no longer craves for it. It can also be interpreted that a thought or desire is postponed for a further date and temporarily it has been kicked out from the mind and heart. It may crop up or not in the person’s heart again.

Edgar Cayce,had this to say:
As related to individuals these each vibrate to certain numbers according to their name, their birth date ... then when these appear, they become either as strengths or as losses or as helps or as change ... but ... they are rather as the signs, or the omens; and may be given as warnings ... in any manner that they may be constructive in the experience of the individual
The primary vibrations are 1 through 9, plus master vibrations of 11 and 22. Vibrations above 9 can be reduced to primary by adding the digits together. For example, 10, 19 and 28 are "1's" because 1 + 0 = 1, 1 + 9 = 10 = 1 + 0 = 1, and 2 + 8 = 10 = 1 + 0 = 1.

The reduced vibrations are by nature general. The basic vibrations give ballpark information that can be helpful and is summarized by key words associated with each. You will notice that the characteristics associated with each vibration are both positive and negative, which illustrates the point about the general nature of reduced vibrations.

1 Creativity, independence, originality, ego, self
2 Empathy, cooperation, consideration, over-sensitivity, co-dependence
3 Artistic expression, sociability, friendliness, superficiality, wastefulness
4 Practicality, application, loyalty, rigidity, repression
5 Freedom, adaptability, travel, inconsistency, abuse of senses
6 Love, responsibility, understanding, meddling, jealousy
7 Spirituality, mental analysis, wisdom, fault finding, suppression
8 Executive ability, management, power, materiality, unscrupulousness
9 Artistic genius, humanitarianism, romance, emotionalism, dissipation
11 Intuition, idealism, invention, insensitivity, fanaticism
22 Practical idealism, material mastery, get-rich-quick schemes, viciousness
The 11 (K) and 22 (V) are master vibrations, and therefore are not reduced when doing chart calculations. When these vibrations are active in an individual's life they can be reduced by the way that person lives them, and in such instances, they take on the negative aspects of the reduced vibration. Thus an individual can turn the imagination and inspiration of the 11 into the leaning, whining co-dependence of the negative 2, or the material mastery and world vision of the 22 into the stingy drudgery of the negative 4.

And a very interesting article on the numerology of 9-11:
http://www.sptimes.com/2002/09/24/Floridian/9_1_1_numerology.shtml

Hans Decoz believes each numeral has its own qualities. He is a numerologist from Galveston, Texas, who sells software from a Pensacola address. Last year, he wrote an Internet essay on the meaning behind the numbers 9/11/2001.

When the New York Lottery numbers were announced, he decided maybe his fixation on the number 2001 had sidetracked him. He reworked his numbers chart, using only 911. What he found, he says, "is not really flattering to Americans."

"The extravagant abuse of material resources in this country is disgusting," Decoz says. "Those numbers coming up on the anniversary of the tragedy are like our combined self-conscious trying to tell us to pay attention."

The 9, he says, is the most idealistic of all numbers. It stands for compassion, healing, sacrifice and taking care of the world at large. "The Mother Teresa among the single-digit numbers."

One is the warrior number, he says. It knows no fear. One wants to direct and control the actions of others. It's the Donald Rumsfeld digit.

"The 9 as the cornerstone of 911 tells me that the message is global. ... It warns against fanaticism. It is not Islam that is at the core of the conflict facing us today," he says. "It is the cold heart of the zealot."

So, what's with the 11?

"It's the most sensitive, feminine, and subtle of all numbers. It's nonconfrontational and it loves peace," he says. It's the hippie number. The hope.

"The 11 tells us that when this conflict has come to pass ... a new era will emerge, one influenced by a global sense of sensitivity vs. brutal force and intolerance."

TRy your library or a book store dealing with the occult. It's all a bunch of crap, but if you take it as just fun, let it be that. Not everyone counted in base 10 so the mystical 23 in base 10 would be 121 in base 4. . The Babylonians gave us 60 minutes in an hour because they counted in 60's and dozens. Enjoy and don't go off the deep end.

Numerology is pure claptrap! Accidents of number bases, the arbitrary nature of the calendar (there are many calendars, not just ours), the arbitrary order of the letters of the many alphabets in the world, the arbitrary spelling of words with so many letters -- all add up to *nothing*.

Numerology is lame even by newage standards (and the word you meant to use was 'piqued').
