My back has been hurting for over 5 months. It is in the middle to lower spine area. It feels like if I could crack my back, the pressure would be relieved, but it isn't the problem. It feels compressed, and standing is the only relief I get other than laying flat on my back.
Muscle relaxers don't work.

Arching my back backward provides little relief, but I can't stay that way forever.

The pain can be better or worse, and at its worst, I find myself holding my breath. (such as while pulling weeds or bending over for long periods)

Actually, if you can't afford a doctor, your county's public health center may offer you some help. Look up government offices in the phone book.

By the way, don't be rude. He could be working in a public library. Then again, he could have his own computer :0

Go with that instinct that you need to crack your back. You likely have a subluxated disc in your spine. Twist your torso and feel the crack and see if that relieves at least some discomfort. Ice is an excellent topical pain reliever, too.
When you are able, please get to a chiropractor.
You are feeling muscles holding on to a section of your spine that is compromised. When the misalignment is addressed, the body will begin to relax and heal.

well mlgable, even the homeless can access computers in libraries across the country, so this person my not have their own computer. But if they want to know why they hurt, they have to see a professional....other wise, they just have to deal with the pain. I recommend ice packs myself.
