My parents let me live with them if I pay rent, but I have to pay my own college.
Welcome to adulthood.

no...i don't think they should....lots of kids get jobs in high school to pay for college....I think if a parent can pay and they want to, that's great...otherwise.....its not something I believe they're obligated to do.
If money is so tight for the student then they can get a student loan like everyone else.....its available to everyone and will teach the student about responsibility.
At that point in their life its time the student, who is by now officially an adult, take on responsibility.
Again if a parent can and wants to pay or help pay for some of all of their child's education they are welcome to. But its immature for anyone to believe that its a parents obligation and duty to do so.
Also....with college comes a lot of new-found freedom and its very very VERY easy to spend that first year or so partying and pissing away school.....but if the student is paying for that schooling maybe they'd be less likely to throw their money down the drain....and even if they do....well, the student has to pay that money back. At least their parent didn't pay for them to get sh!tty everynight and not go to class.

I'll be going to college in September and I hope my parents will pay for me! at least just for the first year...I'm in my final year at school now, studying for the exams that will decide whether or not I get accepted in to college so I actually can't work...

No and I am very happy they did not. It is not their responsibility to pay for college. If you decide to go to college, you pay. I can see a parent helping a child out with living expenses or buying them a car so they have reliable transportation to earn a living.
I had one student loan and worked 3 jobs to put myself through college and it was the most rewarding time of my life.
And all of my friends that had a free ride (parents paid tuition, room & board) all dropped out. Mind you that was only about 10 people since most of the people I hung out with also paid their own way and had loans.

Sure, if your parents are financially capable of paying, then that's a possibility. In my case, though, I paid my own way through college by working a full-time job and going to night classes as a non-resident on campus student.

I received a baseball scholarship but injured myself after 1 year and could no longer play, so I borrowed the money and paid back $24,000 in student loans. I was given gas money by my parents.

Regretably my parents were poor and for paying for college I did it by any means necessary. I had a part time job and I used to steal and resell bicycles.

My parents did not help at all...I did it completely on my own.
I have 3 kids in college right now and we helped each one get started but they are doing it on their own now. My oldest daughter will graduate with her masters degree in business & finance this year.
I think it's very important that they understand the importance of their education and they will appreciate it more if they do it themselves. I know I did.

I'm a freshmen and my parents pay my college tuition and didn't make me move out. I really appreciate it. It makes it easier since I can take more classes and study harder.
