no one can see my games on nwn because of my router. I found out that I need to change to a static ip address. My problem is while I'm trying to change it I need to find out my dns server. I have already typed in cmd and ipconfig /all. My dns is the same as my default gateway and the site tells me that if it shows as the same then its not my real dns. If I continue changing my ip without my real dns server number I won't be able to browse the internet. The site suggests that I need to log into my router's web interface and look at my router's status. I have done extensive searches on my window's explorer searching under my router's name and code and I get nothing. My dad is to old fashioned to help me he tells me not to mess with the computer, but I'm bored and I want to host a game for people. If I call my ISP for the dns server code they might not give me the answer since its under my dad's name, or they could even inform him. How would you suggest I handle this situation?

It has nothing to do with a static IP address, you need to forward whatever game port you're using to the computer you're going to be hosting the game on.

A DNS server is NOT a default gateway, it's the system that changes domain names (like yahoo.com) into ip addresses like 68.2.16.30.

To forward a port, you're going to need to connect to the router, and that would be your default gateway. To do that, run ipconfig again and put that IP address in your browser (i.e. Internet explorer, firefox, safari, Opera, netscape). You should be prompted for a password.

From there, you need to look for port forwarding. To make it easy you can just put your computer's ip address in as the "DMZ" which means all ports are forwarded to you, or you can specify a range and have them forwarded to your ip address (ipconfig).

Now, if you're using a router, your ip address is going to be something like 192.168.*.*, 172.168.*.*, 10.*.*.*, that's a PRIVATE IP ADDRESS, and cannot be connected to from the internet. To figure out your actual ipaddress, go to: http://whatismyip.com

Have your friends connect to that after you've forwarded the correct ports to your computer (google whatever games you're playing's name along with "port" and it should give you the correct port(s)).

If your gateway (routers) ip address is for ex: 192.168.0.1 then you can set your Primary dns to this address also. This will actually use your ISP's dns server. You don't have to use that either you can put 4.2.2.2 for the primary dns and it will work also. A lot people use Public DNS servers of their choice or choosing.

To follow up, winopride post is correct if you goal is to allow external users to connect to your computer.

Search your ISP's website. It may be listed online.
