Was he in vietnam? Since vietnam was such a scary and gruesome experience it would probably best not to make a comedic attempt at that, as most wont laugh (the ones who were there). If you were there, im sure you wouldn't joke about it too.

Alright, maybe you're not making fun of vietnam, but since it is so touchy even involving it in a joke of any sort could be offensive. Maybe you should read more carefully, then you will see i never said you made fun of vietnam. Making a comedic attempt at vietnam doesnt mean u have to make fun of vietnam directly, it will hurt even if it is in vietnam.
For example if you say "the people in vietnam are idiots" u are not making fun of vietnam, but it could hurt a war veteran because it is involved in the joke, even though u made fun of the people, and not vietnam.
