I have a chinese algse eater that has outgrown my community tank. I read they will go good with cichlids? Can I put one cichlid in with him in a 5 gallon aquarium?

Well, chinese algae eaters can do okay with certain agressive cichlids because oftentimes, chinese algae eaters are just as aggressive.
However, they are not suitable for a 5 gallon tank, nor or any cichlids.
So, no, you couldn't put a CAE and a cichlid in a 5 gallon tank, but only because the tank is way too small. However, there's a decent market for big fish, so you may be able to find a buyer if you can locate your local aquarists' club.

Ok, so if he has OUTGROWN your community tank, and you are thinking about moving him to a 5 gallon tank, HOW BIG IS YOUR COMMUNITY TANK??? I hope it isn't less than 5 gallons! I mean, please do some research. No, a chinese algae eater is not suitable for a 5 gallon tank, and neither are cichlids. Any good fish profile website will tell you that. If you don't have a suitable home for your fish, rehome it or bring it back to the store.

Kyle, if you want the answer you are hoping for, listen to sexylady. If you want the true answer, listen to Zoe. Cichlids are highly territorial and even the mildest are somewhat aggressive - even the smallest cichlid should be kept in nothing less then a 10, or even 15 gallon tank. The CAE gets very aggressive and shouldn't really be kept in anything less then 30 or even 40 gallons.

No. CAE gets too larger by itself for a 5 gallon and almost no cichlids would be happy in a 5 gallon.

5 gallon aquariums are too small for everything but maybe 2 gold fish. I wouldnt recomend putting a cichlid and a alge eater in it, because of the space issues. but you can put an alge eater and cichlids in the same tank.
