If you're looking at the building's shadow, at noon, when the shadow is the shortest and the sun is the highest, the shadow is facing true north. The side of the building receiving the most light would be the south side...figure east and west sides from there.

assuming that you don't have a map or a compass i would utilize the information that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west...
