The damp has only recently become visible, it is a line about 20cm thick across the whole side of the wall. Could it be poor ventilation causing this or more likely a bigger problem?

There's a number of things that could be causing this depending on the construction and elevation. However, it is something that should be looked into as it can cause rot and mold.

Failure of the dpc is one possibility

Has ground level been increased on the damp side?

Problem unlikely to be ventilation.

go out side and look at ground levels ...there should be two coarse of bricks below the damp coarse in the clear ...if not remove the soil until there is ..make sure all gutters are working without leaks

probably condensation, do you have heating in this room, try painting the wall with damp proof paint and make sure the room is well ventilated and well heated

is the wall external? if so you had any heavy rain or new paving laid outside breaching dpc?? if not could be a leaking pipe in the wall or a flooded neighbour?? if none of these and it persists call a builder

This happened to me, it turned out that my house was falling down... Oh NOO... I see it aga--crack,boom,crash,zzzzzz,fire engine sound in the distance....
