1st anna l., pit bulls do not have locking jaws to clear that mess up. They just have very powerful jaws that can easily be pried open with a break stick. And one problem with the dogs attacking kids is, they tease the dog. As to the last question, it unfortunately is a bit of both. 'pit bulls' (mostly huge non pure ones) are being trained for fighting and protecting, mostly by means of abuse. Then somehow they get loose and like somebody else said, take it out on the 1st person they see. Alot of the stories arent entirely true though. There was an attack in Australia where a little girl was bitten by the dog, it was a chow mx and the media called it a pit bull. The media just talks about it alot because they know it makes a good story for the 'pit bull haters'. Most of the time they dont show when they find an abused 'pit bull' tied up in a yard... only if it bites somebody. Last year there was a tiny story about a lady that cut her pit bulls ears off with scissors to 'make it look mean'. Mostly, they dont show those stories... half the time, if the media and public got thier heads out of their asses, theyd notice, hey maybe this wasnt the dogs fault. What has this dog been through its whole life, what conditions is it in, has it been neutered/spayed, proper training at a REAL training place with a credited instructor? 80% of the time it owuld be negative answers to all those questions. no its in the cellar, no trianing, not fixed.

oh yes. every pit bull in the world is rebelling and will be holding a riot in one week!! dumbass it just means there are more and more idiots who are being irresponsible owners and not keeping an eye on there dogs! and the whole pit bull puppy chewing off a babys toes is BS it wasnt the pitty it was the ferrit.
and this breed is the most people friendly dogs there is. it is even proven through tests done with all breed dogs. people just dont like the breed because they have to complain about one of the breeds sometimes! in the past it has been the german shepard, doberman, and rottweiler now its the pittys

Nobody wants to hear about a golden retriever attack. Pit bull headlines sell. It's all the media. America loves her villains.
Pit bull breeds and mixes (yes, there are many) make up a very large percentage of America's dog population. Especially in certain areas. If they were as vicious and unpredictable as the media would have us believe, there would literally be hundreds of attacks daily.

I think they were originally bred to be aggressive fighting dogs, with jaws that would not let go of an opponents neck. As the nature vs nurture arguement goes most of them are good dogs if they are not encouraged to be aggresive. You should not leave any dog alone with young children unsupervised, and any dog can become aggresive if it percieves itself, family, property threatened or something triggers its pursuit of prey instict. Media is always trying to outdo each other on shock value for ratings, so the perception might not match the statistics, or perhaps pitt bulls are just a more popular breed right now, so there is more of them around to report about.

Bad owners. Pit bulls have the ability to hurt because of their lock jaw but they are really not mean animals. If raised correctly they are huge babies. Mine wear sweaters and sleep under the covers. Granted if you are crawling in my window they will hurt you. If a dog or person challenges a pit bull than the pit gets violent and the pit wins because of that jaw. But they should not get stereotyped as violent dogs.
Than you have the pit owners who raise their pits to be mean. Those are the dogs they put on TV. These owners chain a pit to a post and let other pits attack it to make the dog tough. They also don't feed them right. If any breed was treated like this they would be mean too. They just don't have the strength, teeth and lock jaw like a pit.
Believe me they are really good dogs. They are loyal, smart and dumb in one, they can protect you and your home, they are great with kids. I think once someone owns a pit they change their view of them.

It's not the dogs, but the dog owners. As they get put in jail, their dumba$$ brother or sister treats them like ****. They get pissed off and take it out on the first person they see. Unfortunately, they aren't smart enough to bite their owner's necks.
