Does it seem that most candidates are running only for the fact that they are republican or democrat and not for the reason to better the country?

Sadly this is the case. BOTH party's have sold us out just so they can remain or acquire their party's power. A shameful disgrace.

It does seem to be the case - the choice you have in the states is similar to the choice in Britain - two parties relying on soundbites and headlines rather than hard policy differientiation.

Both the Republican and Democrat parties take the popular opinion of the country and work it into their policies with very few real differences, politics is all about personal popularity these days unfortunately. That's why Kerry (bland, boring) was such a poor choice of presidential candidate.

I think you'll see citizens in local communities, of both parties, genuinely trying to make their communities better. On a National scale, there is something funny motivating these folks. The answer is: Term limits!
