When I went to have my brakes replaced last time the mechanic told me my caliper was a tearing, which I blame myself for, (whole other story). Anyway, he said that when it comes time to replace my brakes again I am going to have to probably get my caliper replaced, too. He said that was going to cost me about $500 dollars. I was thinking of just buying the caliper and getting a friend to put it in, what do you think? What is a good price for a caliper? Is it that difficult to install? Thanks a head of time!

It is a 2001 LX four door Honda Civic, automatic. I know the guy wasn't lying to me, he was my ex-boyfriend's father. He said he greased it up a bit to slow down the damage.

I don't know about the price, but what do you mean the caliper was tearing? I have never heard that, what you do mean?

What sort of brake problems have you had, I mean what would indicate that the caliper needs to be replaced? Did he tell you why? I would think if there was a problem with the caliper it would need to be replaced now, not next time you get your brakes done in like 40,000 miles. That makes no sense. If it was a problem, it's a problem and needs to be delt with now, not down the road.

Perhaps he is just making a suggestion that next time they should be replaced before they do have a problem, which isn't right anyhow. There is no standard replacement time, just when they are bad.
So again, I am just confused on what the problem with the caliper is, and why it needs to be replaced. If it really does, why not now, why later?

I would find a new mechanic.
BTW with just a quick look, I would say about 200 dollars is what it should cost, again this is just a quick look at the labor times and parts cost.

Ok so you trust him, but still there is no tearing a caliper.

You don't give much detail in reference to the vehicle but here's Auto Zone's for a Civic LX- They made 5 or 6 different Civics.
